D5 HEATED CELL POWER
SUPPLY UNIT
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
- Check the ‘Voltage Select’ switch at the back of
the unit. It must be set to the correct mains power supply voltage
for the country in which the unit is to be used.
- Switch the unit on.
- The temperature control unit will flash “INPUT FAIL”.
- Plug in the Hot Cell
T (see below for temperature controller input selection)
- Set the required temperature by holding down the * button whilst
using DOWN or UP keys, as appropriate.
‘HOT POWER’ SWITCH
- H series - Ambient to 100°C use Low; 100°C
to 180°C use Medium. High can be used to reach the set temperature
quickly but switch back to the appropriate setting as the set temperature
is approached.
- HT series - Ambient to 100°C use Low; 100°C
to 200°C use Medium; 200°C to 300°C use High. High can
also be used for quickly achieving lower temperature settings, as
mentioned for the H series.
For typical applications the H series cell is used. The power supply
unit is delivered configured for use with such a cell.
For higher temperature applications the HT series cell is used.
A platinum resistance device is built in to each unit and is therefore
integrated into the supply socket.
The temperature controller must be configured properly for the cell
type in use to ensure the operating temperature range of the cell
is not exceeded.
To instruct the CAL unit proceed as follows:-
- Press and hold DOWN and UP keys until ‘TUNE’ is displayed.
Release the buttons.
- Press DOWN key once briefly to ‘LEVL’.
- Hold * and press UP key once briefly to LEVL, ‘2’.
Release *.
- Press DOWN or UP keys repeatedly to ‘HISC’.
(HT): - Hold * and press DOWN or UP keys repeatedly, as appropriate
until 300 (hold DOWN or UP keys down and wait. The rate of change
in the value increases the longer you hold). Release *.
(H): - Hold * and press DOWN or UP keys repeatedly, as appropriate
until 200 (hold DOWN or UP keys down and wait. The rate of change
in the value increases the longer you hold). Release *.
- Press UP key once briefly to ‘LOSC’.
- Hold * and press DOWN or UP keys repeatedly, as appropriate until
0. Release *.
- Press and hold DOWN and UP keys until ‘LOSC’ disappears
and a figure is displayed. Release the buttons.
NOTE: H series cells must not be operated at temperatures
in excess of 200°C. HT series cells are safe to temperatures
NOT EXCEEDING 300°C. |
Refer to the Autotune
section to complete the set-up of the system for optimal performance.
COMMUNICATIONS
This unit can communicate with and be controlled by a PC. For full
comms set-up instructions refer to Communications
set-up.
AUTOTUNE
A facility that uses the CAL controllers brain
to set the unit up for optimal control of the accessory connected
to a set temperature.
The CAL unit is supplied ready for use with standard Hot cells and
will control them adequately. It has however been found that
the default settings are sometimes not ideal. It is recommended that
Autotune should be used and that it would be beneficial to use it
for each and every change of setpoint with all cells.
For successful operation of the system using Autotune carry out the
following procedure:-
NOTE: When Autotune is in use the Hot power switch
must not be disturbed at all. We recommend that the
Hot power switch be set to med before continuing further. |
- Set the required temperature by holding down the * button
whilst using UP or DOWN, as appropriate.
- Press and hold UP and DOWN until tunE is displayed.
Release the buttons.
- Press DOWN repeatedly until CyC.t.
- Hold * and hold UP until A - -. Release
the buttons.
- Press UP repeatedly until tunE.
- Hold * and press DOWN once briefly to on. Release
*.
- Press and hold UP and DOWN until tunE disappears and
a figure is displayed. Release the buttons.
- Plug the required cell in.
- Leave the unit to calculate all necessary settings for optimal
control of the cell, to your setpoint.
The setpoint should be reached within approximately 5 minutes with
insignificant overshoot and will hold the value very accurately.
In the event of a fuse blowing a list of replacements is as follows:
-
Mains Inlet = 1A anti-surge (115V), 500mA anti-surge (230V);
HOT = 4A semi-delay.
All fuses are 5x20mm types.
SPECIFICATIONS
The D5 Comm has the versatility of either stand-alone operation
or control by a p.c. via a serial link. In the latter mode full control
of the unit is then passed over to the Calcomms p.c. interface.
This feature allows the user to plot temperature against time.
NOTE: The use of the comms facility is limited
to p.c's with Windows operating systems only. |
INPUTS:
230/115V, 50/60 Hz, switchable, by filtered IEC inlet, fused.
Platinum Resistanve Thermometer.
OUTPUT:
- 24V d.c. @ 3A with High, Medium and Low energy settings (Full,
Half and Quarter power respectively).
The output is fully smoothed and is fused. All negative lines are
grounded.
The unit is built in to a high quality metal case, which is itself
grounded.
